What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?

Toughened and laminated glass are two products that are designed with safety in mind to cause minimal injury when it breaks, compared to regular float glass.

Toughened glass is one panel that has undergone a process to make it 4-5 times stronger than regular float glass. When this glass breaks, it will shatter into thousands of small pieces.

Laminate glass is two pieces of glass laminated together with a film in the middle. If this glass was to break it simply cracks but holds together like a windscreen.

Why has my glass exploded or cracked?

Despite the fact that toughened and laminate glass are a safety glass, there are still instances where the glass can shatter or crack. Accidental breakages do occur on occasion and there are a few reasons this can happen

• Thermal stress/shock - when the glass has had significant changes in the temperature. The temperature can cause the glass to expand and contract
• Impact to a glass panel from a rock, ball or an everyday item can cause impact and smash or crack your glass
• Binding in frame – when your glass expands due to climate and if there is no space within the frame for the glass to expand, then the glass will shatter or crack
